I Almost Feel Sorry For Him
Almost. (Via TPM)
Even the most ardent Bushie will admit that public speaking has never been his greatest gift, but today’s statement on the failure of the horrible immigration bill in the Senate was somewhat unique. The bravado… gone. The sneering… gone. The attempt to speak to reporters as if he somehow knew something they did not (albeit monosylabically)… gone.
All that was left was a man who, at least appeared, to realize that not only is he a lame duck who cannot get Republican senators to return his calls, but that his legacy will be compared to Hoover and Carter, and probably not so favorably.

A lot depends on what happens after he’s gone. Surely if Jimmah Carter can be rehabilitated there is room of GW as well - just based on his supreme court appointments alone (whose magnificent fruits we are seeing ripen this week).
BTW - you might find this amusing: Dan Rather Wins 1st James Earl Carter Bitter Old Man Award
I have been a strong Bushie, but I have lost a little confidence in him and don’t trust some of his motives in various legislation. I’d suggest he get back to making the tax cuts permanent and sticking that to the Democrats, etc. He needs to put these guys on the defensive rather than trying to play into their graces. That is a suckers game. It is as fatutous as beliving that if he supports the Immigration Legislation that somehow that will secure the Hispanic vote and love. He better start figuring out who his friends are. I don’t know if he is down to playing for his “legacy” or working for the best interest of the country………steve
