My New Heroes
The SDFD.

These guys are studs. According to the local news, they’re all running on about five hours of sleep since Sunday, and they are still saving homes in ways that defies belief. They are actually saving the vast majority of houses that are in the direct path of the fires.
Just FYI, It still sucks here. The winds have died down, but I still have not seen a single commercial on the local channels. Two new big fires flared up today, and some of the evac centers are now turning people away. The local Marine base (Camp Pendleton) also has new fires, but say they think they can control them. All of the schools are closed for the week and the community is coming together in a way you could not believe (I shit you not, at one point they said that one of the most needed items were palettes and boxes to put the other donated goods in).
I’m fine, and though the fires are now much closer than I would like, my place should be OK. If not, it will have gone through two suburbs to get here, of course the fire is at the edge of the first of them.
Update: I think this might be almost over. The teevee is telling us which residents can return to thier homes, rather than those who need to flee. The smoke is all but gone here, and the children of the scary invaders from the south are now playing their crazy version of “football” in the street in front of my house.
Update 2: Ugh. Some of the networks are saying that the reprieve is due to the fact that the winds are now blowing the other way, and the fires will now spread to the east. I don’t buy it. I think the situation is really winding down. At least there is a little bit of humor in this (at least for me, in my sad little Defiant world) because the local teevee anchors are so tired that they are now babbling worse than I do on a Saturday night. “Stay classy, San Diego!” ![]()
