The Bourbon Edition

From Wiki:  Bourbon is an American form of whiskey named for Bourbon County, Kentucky. By United States law, it consists of at least 51% corn — typically about 70% — with the remainder being wheat and/or rye, and malted barley.[1] It is distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof, and aged in new charred oak barrels for at least two years.[1] The two years maturation process is not a legal requirement for a whiskey to be called “bourbon,” but it is a legal requirement for “straight bourbon.”[2] However, in practice, most bourbon whiskeys are aged for at least four years.

R.I.P.  -  2% of Jim Beam’s inventory goes up in flames

Last June, a terrible tragedy befell the bourbon community as a Jim Beam warehouse caught on fire.  While this story was buried in the news, it shouldn’t escape our attention.  The wood-frame Jim Beam warehouse collapsed about two hours after the fire was reported at 3 p.m. and continued burning. The company said the warehouse held about 19,000 barrels of bourbon, or less than two percent of its bourbon inventory.

The web site Chowhound rated the top 12 bourbons.  Here were their top five:

5) Old Charter 10 Year Old

4) Wild Turkey 101

3) Wild Turkey Rare Breed

And Tied for 1st place were

Makers Mark and W.L. Weller Special Reserve

Tell me what brand of whiskey that Grant drinks. I would like to send a barrel of it to my other generals.   - Abraham Lincoln

The Mint Julep

  • 3 sprigs fresh mint
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 teaspoon superfine sugar
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • Muddle 2 mint sprigs, the water, and the sugar in a highball or collins glass or a silver Julep cup.

Fill the glass with crushed ice, and pour in the bourbon.

Garnish with the remaining mint sprig.   And after all of that bullshit, just make your next drink a straight shot of bourbon or add a little coke to it.

And Finally, an ode to our old buddy John Daniels from Jerry Lee Lewis

A woman wrings her hands and cries
    ‘I’ve lost my man’
    You should-a seen him
Tote that diesel ‘cross the land

    Now you’ll find him
    Up on Lynchburg, Tennessee
    Collecting bottles
    In his old dungarees
    And the Silver Dollar Saloon
We’re gonna break him of it soon

    Jack Daniel’s Old No7
    Tennessee Sour-Mashed Whiskey
    Jack Daniel’s Old No7-a
    Tennessee Sour-Mashed Whiskey
He used to be so frisky

Obligatory Disclaimer: Saturday Night Souse® and Conclub in no way wishes to encourage the consumption of this uniquely American beverage.  It’s not our fault that you drank too much of it once when you were in college and now you can hardly smell the stuff.   So stop sniffing it and drink up you sissy ass!

    1. I grew up in Kentucky, not all that far away from Bourbon County, and your choice of Maker’s Mark as the best shows excellent taste.

      Jack Daniels? Fie on thee!

    2. I’m not much of a Bourbon guy, so I’m glad E did a Souse for America’s official distilled spirit.

A previous Souse dedicated to champagne is here.

    3. DFV said, “I’m not much of a Bourbon guy.” Interestingly enough I have only had Makers Mark once. Unsurprisingly, it was in DFV’s liquor cabinet. When DFV says, I’m not much of a (fill drink in here) guy, he means that he has an expensive bottle of the shit in his liquor cabinet and he only drinks it once a week or so. My drinking habit is really just a JV squad when put up against DFV’s powerhouse varsity. How quickly that 18 year old freshman I let into my apartment kegger has grown!

    4. Yes, but there’s a reason the Maker’s Mark was still in the cabinet. Stuff of which I “am a guy” doesn’t sit in the liquor cabinet very long :)
