E’s 2008 Predictions
Each year, the wise sages on Conclub have offered up some very specific predictions for the upcoming year. So great are our predictions that when we look back, one would think that we were viewing the future on the pages of the local newspaper. Our pontifications are world renowned and should soon become the benchmark for those who wish to impress their friends with their knowledge of upcoming events. . .
Okay, maybe they are just fun to read. You can get a sense of my accuracy by clicking previous predictions above.
So without further prattle, it is my pleasure to kick off the Conclub 2008 predictions.
In Politics
-
Democrats will sober up and quit playing with the unrealistic and inexperience of Barack Obama. After a rough-and-tumble spring, Hillary Clinton will emerge from the pack and bring the party together. Despite their sober choice, the convention in Denver will see the usual assortments of moonbats and crazies demanding that the party act as insane as they do. Minor rioting will hold the day in Denver but police forces will quickly control the situation and the far left will once again come off as looking like a bunch of spoiled children.
-
Republicans will furiously jockey for position throughout the winter and early spring. When Fred Thompson exits the race and throws his support behind John McCain, all will look rosy for the Senator from Arizona. Mike Huckabee will follow Thompson in endorsing McCain. But in a surprising move spurred on by several third place finishes, Mitt Romney will drop from the race in March, endorse Rudy Giuliani, and Giuliani will carry the day.
-
In a closely contested race punctuated by the fight for New York, Hillary Clinton will become the nations first female President. DFV will gloat saying, “he told us all along.”
-
In order to avoid having to take unpopular positions during an election year, very little will get done during the 2008 legislative session. Surprisingly, this is a good thing (except for immigration).
-
Republicans will fail to take back either house of Congress but with Dems in control of the government and a severe recession looming, 2010 will be a great year to be a Republican.
In Foreign Affairs
-
Fidel Castro will die (this time for real)
-
Despite all of the concern over Pakistan, the government will remain relatively stable with Musharaff in control. Elections will go off as planned (although delayed) and Pakistan will continue being an unstable partner in the hunt for Osama.
-
Iraq will contiue its march toward stability. In the early part of the year, a major accord will be reached unifying the government. This will enable the U.S. to begin drawing down their troops. The left will virtually ignore the success throughout the campaign (for good reason) and the right will hammer the left on what a joke their foreign policy is. Bush will leave office a victor in Iraq.
-
Despite the hyteria of the left, there will be no invasion of Iran.
-
The olympics in China will put a nice face on the country but bloggers and journalists will show what a farce the “new China” really is. Despite impressive economic gains, the vast majority of Chinese that live in poverty will be shown to the world, much to China’s chagrin.
In Business
-
In an effort to stave off recession, interest rates will continue to be cut. This will spark minor inflation and spark the beginning of the recession (in November). The value of the dollar will also continue its plummet.
-
This recession will also be brought on by increasing oil prices. $130 per barrel oil will see gas prices approach (but not reach) $4.00 per gallon of gas. The U.S. will continue to foolishly tout ethanol hybrids as the answer which will continue to drive up the cost of food, which will add further fuel to the recession. Dems will counter during the campaign that taxes on energy suppliers is needed. Americans will foolishly agree.
-
The writers strike will be settled early in the year but good will come from it. The burgeoning influx of reality television and game shows that are trying to offset the lack of creative viewing will cause Americans to finally say ‘enough.’ Reality television is here to stay, but its popularity will wane so much so that by late 2008, television producers will be pouring over their next dramatic and sitcom production possibilities. The next wave of great t.v. (think ‘Must see T.V.’) will be seen again, probably starting in 2009.
In Sports
-
The worst Bowl season in memory ends with Ohio State defeating LSU on Jan. 7. No one actually believes that the Buckeyes are the best team in the nation and no one will change the system.
-
The Patriots will run the table and go 19 – 0
-
The Celtics will win the Eastern Conference but won’t win the title.
-
Team USA will rebound and win Olympic gold in mens hoops.
-
The Rockies will win the World Series.
-
The University of Colorado will win the Big 12 North title.
-
Colorado State University will still fare poorly but will steadily rebuild in football.
-
UCLA will defeat North Carolina in mens basketball in March.
-
Some olympian will test positive for steroids and the world will express disbelief.
And. . .
-
Conclub will reach record numbers by July, thanks in part to a Sage post about Sarkozy’s gal pal.
-
PG will scare some poor soul off who believes that Ralph Nader is the answer to our problems.
-
DFV and Wes will post predictions but won’t be heard from again until April.
-
The Beast will continue to dazzle us with his stories from New England and in a strange twist of fate, will meet up with that blonde girl again. Wedding plans will be made early next year.
-
Andre will come on from time to time to bitch about something and then complain that some (fill in ethnicity here) are keeping him busy at work. He will make inroads in the relationship category by falling madly in love with some guy named Earl.
-
Guru Steve will also appear to tell us that his internet is shaky. Eventually he will pay his bill and stop periodically posting from Circuit City.
-
Dana will see the light by reading too much Pandagon. He will quickly take a leftward turn, announce that Common Sense is a neo-communist site and alienate Art and the rest of the crew over there.
NEXT?

E, your predictions suck. Everything from Clinton winning this race to the Patriots winning the Super Bowl to Ohio State not being the best team. If Clinton and the Patriots win, I’ll kill myself or better yet not show up on this blog ever again. I’m sure you would like that, but your doomsday predictions are crap.
Fultz

ouch fultz! Wise people have feelings too! I don’t want Clinton to win, I just think she probably will. And the only reason I want the Patriots to go 19 and 0 is so I don’t ever, ever, eeeeeveerrrr have to see Mercury Morris on television again.
As for Ohio State, if you think either the Buckeyes or LSU are the best two teams, then you probably think Ron Paul is the best candidate too.
Okay, no love from Fultz. I can’t wait to see everyone else’s predictions. And I anxiously await the praise to be heaped on these rock-solid predictions. Just don’t all log in at once; you’ll jam the server.

You think Guliani for the repubs huh? I’m not sure that he’ll do all that well in the south and midwest or here in NJ. I hope to god that you’re wrong about Hillary however I suspect that you are right. As for the Republicans I think Huck’s showing in Iowa will not be repeated and I think Guliani’s shunning of Iowa may have cost him some momentum. Tough call for the right but I’m going to go out on a limb and say McCain may pull it off.
Fidel will live to see 102. China will begin its slow lurch toward implosion and their showing at the olympics will be a poorly fabricated (like most things made in China) facade that will be seen through by the west

Hmmm
E the Wise made his predictions for 2008 on the Constitution Club. They were mostly reasonable, certainly possible, until he got to his very last item:
