Fred’s Not Dead

                               Fred Thompson comes out swinging

The Fredheads received the only good news they have had in a very long time. Fred Thompson, by all accounts, was the clear winner of the South Carolina debate. Too little too late?  Possibly and probably, but this is a state he must do very well in to have a chance for the nomination and this debate could only have helped. When you look at the rise of Huckabee, you have to admit anything can happen in the days to come. And, wisely, Thompson took it to Huckabee tonight.

Here’s why?

via The Corner: Fred Thompson - Riled [Peter Robinson]

Just got off the line with someone close to the Thompson campaign—and, more to the point, to Thompson himself. His reading of what took place tonight? Fred Thompson was riled.

“Nothing ever upset Fred Thompson more than the story [on the day of the Iowa caucuses] that he was considering dropping out to endorse McCain.” Thompson, my friend explained, has a kind of Reagan-like innocence about him. He can’t understand why anyone would circulate such a rumor—or how the rumor has remained alive. “He’s just not the sort of person who would drop out. He likes John McCain, always has. But endorse McCain? Are you kidding? He took a swipe at McCain tonight. Didn’t everybody see that? That’s not how you get to be somebody’s running mate. Anyway, the idea that Fred is the kind of person who would run for vice president is just absurd.”

  1. Crazy potential scenario
    Huck took Iowa
    McCain took NH
    Romney wins MI
    Thomson wins SC
    Rudy take FL

I’m not saying that will happen but it’s set up nicely to go that way. I can’t ever remember a primary season this split. Would this be a 1st? I believe so help me out polysci people. Thomson’s still probably the longest shot of that list but he did have a great debate.

  2. Rudy is not polling well in Florida anymore; he’s more in danger of being eliminated than Fred, who let loose with both barrels. In any case, it doesn’t look like we’re going in to Feb. 5th with any one person dominating and everybody needs to stay in. If we still don’t after that, we’re talking brokered convention, as I predicted.

  3. As a mild “Fredhead”, I’d be happy to see Giuliani drop out. It would only help everyone else no matter who your ‘favorite’ is. It would almost certainly be a great boon to McCain.

  4. Guliani (as everyone knows) put all of his eggs in one basket in Florida. If he’s done there he’s done period. I thik he counted on having a better showing in NH. Dave you think Rudy will put his support behind McCain if he drops out? That’s what I suspect

  5. I have bad news for everyone, but the Romney firewall of Michigan and the last stand for Thompson and Huckabee that is South Carolina, are both caving in. McCain has now jumped ahead in both Michigan and S. Carolina, as well as nationally. He is now — again — the GOP frontrunner.

And Andre is nowhere to be seen. I forget what number he was on (3,486 or something) in listing the reasons why McCain could never be the Republican nominee. But I knew all along that it was because he and his Party feared McCain in November. It’s all just a game to liberal Democrats, and John McCain is the leading scorer of the other team, so they root for his injury.

  6. Latest I’ve heard Romney has a very slim lead in MI.

Of course we have all had a lesson in how useless polls are recently. McCain may get a boost though due to the dems pulling out of MI. We shall see.

  7. It’ll be between Romney and McCain at the RNC. Personally, I’m voting for Romney but would be comfortable with McCain as the nominee. McCain is not quite as liberal as “raise-taxes-release-the-prisoners” Huckabee, at any rate.
