Cover for Surrender?
While this would be a horrible development for Clinton, Obama and the Democratic party it would be another victory for US interests and the Iraqi people. Al-Sadr’s attempts to force his way into political power and influence have mostly floundered and short of an Obama victory and a hasty and ill-timed withdrawal his prospects are looking slimmer everyday. The pounding his forces took over the last couple of weeks at the hands of the resurgent Iraqi military in Basra was an eye opener and may have been the last game of chance that he cared to play. We’ll see, but the combination of the Awakening movement, the Surge and a potential Mahdi army disentegration is turning Iraq from a debacle into a success story. They’ve got a long way to go but the road to ultimate success and stability is far clearer and easier to find these days. And for the record, Sistani is not a bid fan of Sadr. That’s good news for us and the hopes for a better Iraq.
