Trying to Follow the Logic of John McCain
I had to read this three times before I realized he was being serious:
“The bridge in Minneaplois didn’t collapse because there wasn’t enough money. The bridge in Minneapolis collapsed because so much money was spent on wasteful, unnecessary pork-barrel projects.” -St. McCain
This is a man who supports a ridiculous “Gas Tax Holiday”, which would, you know, drain much needed money from the Highway Trust Fund. I’m still waiting to read the bill if he ever bothers to show up at work to introduce it. Earmarks account for about $18 billion dollars a year (or about two months in Iraq, for those keeping score at home). Even his probable VP choice had to back up and say that this is crazy talk.
If the Dems can’t beat this guy, then we deserve the next four years.

No kidding. There was a point at which I was afraid McCain might actually win, but the more he talks, the more he demonstrates that concerns about his age might be valid. His health savings account is useless, and this gas tax suspension is absolutely ridiculous. All his policies are half-baked and warmed-over. When facing either Hillary OR Obama, he’ll look pretty foolish.

Just keep banging your head against the desk, and it will all make sense.

Never underestimate the ability of the Democrats to lose a presidential election.
Am I getting my cynical in my old age? Is the media getting more rabid? Are the campaigns getting uglier? Or are the presidential candidates just getting progressively worse every 4 years?

Well, McCain kinda caught everybody off guard with this crap. He proposed throwing Russia out of the G8. Not sure how he plans to make that one happen.
But Thom, buddy, we live in the age of the internet. Long gone are the days where a Presidential candidate was covered at stump speeches, debates and in the paper. These days we have pictures of Barack Obama eating cake. We have audio of just about every talk any candidate ever gives. That leads to a lot of stupid moments and negativity seeping through.

Would that be the “ridiculous Gas Tax Holiday” that Hillary also supports? I’m all for it. The national average tax rate (state taxes included) on a gallon of gas as of Jan. 2008 is 47 cents per gallon. Of course much more disturbing is that 80 percent of the recoverable oil in the United States is off limits for drilling. Oh, stop the insanity! And can we burn some more food as fuel while we are at it?

So you think the media is the cause Wes. You’re probably right really. Although I AM certainly getting more cynical. It would be interesting to see how past candidates would have made out in the youtube age.
I think the point (at least mine) of the oppositin to the “gas tax holiday” is that it is shortsighted and temporary. Political theater so to speak. Yeah great we save for a limited period but the underlying problem remains. BTW are they getting to work on that legislation? It hasn’t yet been officially proposed as far as I know.

Yes, it would absolutely be the ridiculous gas tax holiday Hillary supports. Except hers is even stupider, because it ties it to taxing oil company profits. Which is a good idea attached to an enormous failure.
Dave, if it included state taxes, at least it would give people some money. But it doesn’t, and as a result, it’s absolutely pointless. And sacrifices a little of jobs and highway safety. Never thought I’d say it, but I miss Mitt.
