Chile Volcano Eruption – Amazing Pics

with 15 comments

From the UK Daily Mail

This astonishing picture shows the Chaiten volcano erupting during storms in the middle of the night

Of course, Bush did nothing to prevent this so it’s his fault.

  1. The carbon footprint of that mountain must be something!

  2. Actually, the electric discharges are a result of the erruption — that is the causality here. The electric poentials were already priming themselves before erruption (volcano +, stratosphere -), but the cloud of erruption particles created the actual conduit for discharges.

  3. Thats what I was thinking. . . I just didn’t want to dazzle you with my wealth of knowledge about…umm… cloud eruption particles and conduits for discharge.

  4. He’s right about the carbon footprint of the volcano though. Without volcanoes most of the CO2 in the atmosphere would long ago have been mineralized through chemical leaching of rocks. Now with people here to help we don need no steenking volcanoes to warm up the atmosphere.

  5. That is if you ascribe to the theories of man made warming. I don’t.

  6. It must be nice living in a fictional reality.

Do you get your own physics too? Tell us how those “lead into gold” experiments are working out for you.

  7. Those are amazing pics. I’m fairly skeptical of the man-made aspect of global warming hyposthesis myself. Heck, Leif Erickson was picking grapes in Canada a thousand years ago…

  8. Possibly he knows something about global biology that you don’t seem to, Pangolin. Try reading up on the dynamics of biological entities for fixing excess CO2 and realize what a large CO2 trap the ocean itself is acting as:

    http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v444/n7120/full/nature05317.html

Of course, the fact that there are studies showing how inaccurate a number of the temperature measuring sites are (due to equipment changes and relocations of the last couple of decades) and the greater impact of solar cycles are stuff that the ‘Man is evil’ crowd chooses to ignore. If you’d like to take the blinders off for a peek, you can peruse the following site for a lot of the hard science that refutes the ‘global warming’ simpletons: http://wattsupwiththat.wordpress.com/

Or my far less scholarly summation of some of this silliness here:

  9. You linked to Anthony Watts? My local christian whacko weather walrus? Hey, how many papers has he published in peer-reviewed journals? How many of those were on climatology?

    Crickets…….

    That would be ZERO.

I don’t know how old you are but glaciers I walked on in the Sierras and Alaska 20 years ago are gone. As in not there any more. Where’d the ice go if it’s cooling?

Yeah, you do live in a fictional reality. Do you date Laura Croft too?

  10. Pangolin, you forgot to mention that they’re all in the pocket of Big Oil. Sloppy sloppy. Keep this up and they’ll take away your Global Warming secret decoder ring.

  11. Creationists and flat-earthers don’t need the big oil payoff. Besides those buck are reserved for 24/7 trolls on A-list blogs and people with scientific credentials, meaning previous papers published and cited, who are willing to jump ship publicly.

    In other news….

The oceans ability to buffer further CO2 concentrations is being overwhelmed.(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7053903.stm) Burning a few million years of carbon concentrations in one hundred years may have been a bad idea.

Ocean acidification could be much worse than increased atmospheric concentrations of CO2 as the formation of calcium carbonate shells in sea creatures is a significant source of natural carbon sequestration. Increased ocean acidity inhibits this process and could lead to negative feedback loops in the carbon cycle.

In english: the ocean isn’t taking our shit anymore.

  12. Right – that’s why the Earth stopped warming in 1998 and may even be starting to cool. Boondoggle.
