Dave’s Quote(s) of the Day
Quotes from Obama’s books
From Dreams of My Father:
”I ceased to advertise my mother’s race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.”
“ I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mothers race.”
”There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.”
”It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.”
”I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn’t speak to my own.”
“It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa, that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.”
From Audacity of Hope:
“I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

Dave- It’s nice to see you focusing on the issues that matter; skin color. It’s not like you can somehow argue that the US is somehow better off under republican rule. We can’t even be said to be “winning” in Afghanistan or Iraq since Bush and cronies refuse to define what a win would be. Well, not the same definition for a whole month anyway.
“Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end
There won’t be any trumpets blowing, come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after - one tin soldier rides away.”-Joni Mitchell
I’m not the one who has focused on skin color. That would be the Rev. Wright and his protege, Mr. Obama.
Oh god did you really quote the “Theme To Billy jack”? What a maudlin tune! However since you invoked it, let’s have a look at the underlying thesis:
The “enlightened” mountain people were rumored to have a treasure buried beneath a stone. The valley people swore they’d have it for their very own. They demanded it. The Mountain people said they’d share it. The valley people slaughtered the mountain people. Then when they unearthed the “treasure” is turned out to be a sign saying “peace on earth”.
Ok so how does this reflect on the Mountain people? They died, but they died smug - and for no reason. Honestly - what good is a sentiment if you bury it beneath a rock? Their unwillingness to admit they had no gold CAUSED war and caused them to be wiped out - so much for “Peace On Earth”. And according to Joni that’s laudable.
Of course the Beast loved “Billy Jack”, particularly the scene where the hippies get condimentally assaulted by locals ruffians with a jar of mustard (the yellow, not the spicy). TV Guide once did a wonderfully wry summation of the movie:
The Legend Of Billy Jack.
A story about a Pacifist who is willing to kill for his cause.
LOL
Personally I am suspicous of anyone who quotes a Joni Mitchell song.
Aw, c’mon. What was Iraq but killing somebody in order to steal a treasure that does us no good?
Actually I hate the damn song and was just trying to pass on an earworm.
Someone left the cake out in the rain……
Full quote:
“Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”
He’s talking about standing with Americans, to prevent a misdirected anti-Muslim bias from denying these Americans their constitutionally-guaranteed civil liberties.
No way johndark, he was crying for REVOLUTION!
Actually he was just engaging in puffery.
