The Constitution Club

First, the name Constitution Club doesn’t actually have anything to do with the Constitution, directly. It has to do with a place – a street to be precise – where the core members of our gang of bloggers first began to hash out the ideas that have since spilled over onto your computer screen.

The year was 1993 and for a group of friends at Colorado State University, an apartment on Constitution Avenue in Ft. Collins, CO was our home base. There, we would often convene on the back porch balcony and debate various issues of the day with cheap cigars and the beverage of one’s choice, which was usually a selection of Diet Pepsi Big Gulps, single malt Scotch, or Coors Light.

On that balcony, as we watched the traffic buzz past on Constitution Avenue, the various levels of intellect, anger, and sobriety would wax and wane — often, but not always, in proportion with one other. The debates were often heated, but only the very best arguments led to actual fisticuffs. These sessions came to be known as the Constitution Club.

Over the years, the home base would change its address, and eventually the gang graduated. But thereafter, whenever and wherever we met to drink, smoke, and tackle the issues of the day, it was known by all as the Constitution Club.

Since then, some members have faded in and out. We’ve been lucky to add some voices from outside the CSU group, and lost some from the initial ranks. But there has always been a core group and a mutual respect.

About five years ago, we started a website so that our divergent paths could once again cross, and of course it was christened Constitution Club. Back in the day, anyone invited to join us on the balcony considered it a privilege to participate in ConClub, and more than a few requested the invite in vain. Today, we invite you out back, to crack open a cold one, smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, and fire away with your best shot.

There isn’t a single issue that all of the ConClubbers agree on, and on many we span the entire spectrum of views. You’ll probably find a few of us with whom you agree most of the time, some others who occasionally catch your eye, and some whom you think are complete morons, threats to all that is good in the world, or a sinister combination of both.

Welcome.
